Zephyr is described by Basement Jaxx as “a Soundscape”. The original idea for the recent album “Scars” was to make a double album - one CD of the ambient, ethereal & mellow side of the Jaxx output and the other comprised of their more traditional floor fillers. In the end, the band decided to release “Scars” as a stand alone album but wanted the “soundscape” to be available shortly after.
The tracks on “Zephyr” were recorded over a two year period in Berlin, New York, London and Bath and feature guest appearances from legendary Ethiopian musician, Mulatu Astatke, and New York jazz vocalist Jose James.

In true end-of-the-year-mixtape fashion the album is packed with all-winners, and no filler. Reaching out across genres to bring you reels of only the best, we’ve included the Motown-infused sound of PPP’s “On A Cloud”, the cosmic vibes of SA-RA and NOMO, and Lord Newborn’s uptempo-psychedelia. Continuing the eclectic outernational selection are the futuristic visions of Austrian-based The Clonious and UK remixer Floating Points whose works sit next to the old school sound of Betty Padgett and the heartbreaking dusty soul of Nino Moschella and Fanny Franklin.

Nik “Pascal” Raicevic’s chief claim to fame is as a session percussionist for two tracks on the Rolling Stones’ Goat’s Head Soup, but in the early 1970s he released several pioneering electronic instrumental albums under various names.
His first release, in 1970, was an eponymous album under the name “Head”; it was released by Buddah Records and contained tracks with names like “Cannabis Sativa” and “Methedrine”. Buddah had second thoughts fairly quickly and Raicevic was soon on his own. He released four albums on his own label (keeping the drug theme by naming it “Narco Records and Tapes”) before selling all his equipment to Steve Roach and dying of an overdose or finding Jesus or something.
This is The Sixth Ear, from 1972, with great spacey Moog sounds. For you DJs out there, this makes a fantastic music bed for back-announcing. Raicevic credits himself under three different pseudonyms on the involved musicians list on the back cover. The engineer is listed as “William Elder”, but I don’t think it’s the Mad/Playboy artist.
D.V.S* is a guitarist/ trip hop dance DJ based out of Colorado. No stranger to spotlight, he has toured with many acts, including DJ Logic, Devotchka, Cabaret Diosa, The Motet, and members of Lotus.
Brian Haas of JFJO says “"The new D.V.S. album, 'Before I Sing', combines beautiful melodies, super fat beats, jazz guitar power, and lush horn harmonies into true, relevant psychedelic trip hop. The vocal samples are tasteful, emotional and spiritual colors that take the human voice into a melodic fragment world reminiscent of late Miles Davis trumpet work. The record tells a story from beginning to end, has a musical arc from first track to last track and employs real theme and development within each composition. World-traveled and well-known drummer/producer Daru Jones is back at it with his third sampler, "Spirit & Soul-Hop" -- Featuring songs produced by Daru himself, and remixes of songs recorded by local and international artists such as Muhsinah, Rena, Kissey Asplund, Eagle Nebula, and more.
For more than a decade, Daru has worked as a professional drummer and producer in many genres, alongside artists such as Talib Kweli, Black Milk, Bilal, Slum Village, J-Live, and Kim Burrell, to name a few.
