Taprikk Sweezee is probably best known to most listeners as the soul vocalist who anchored former Funkstorung member Michael Fakesch’s 2007 album ‘Dos’ as well as it’s accompanying ‘Escalate’ 12”, and now three years on this latest 12” / download EP on Musik Aus Strom sees him continuing to craft a characteristically broken and treacherous take on electronic neo-soul. While the unmistakeable influence of Sweezee’s prior collaborations with Fakesch is certainly immediately present here in the complex, contorted rhythms and use of glitchy textures, Sweezee’s smooth soul vocals see things drifting frequently into the sorts of psyche-soul territory you’d more likely associate with D’Angelo or Prince. Opener ‘Conversea’ emerges from a gentle trail of feathery glitch textures into juddering, off-centre dub-soul. Chris Downton

Young Montana is a name that will likely be on the tips of many tongues during 2011; having made a veritable explosion onto the scene in 2010, the coming months should see the Coventry producer really coming into his own, if this most recent effort can be taken as any indicator.  Taking remixing duty on Beat Connection‘s “Silver Screen”, Yungmo works a subtler tip, for a melodic and garage-y finish that’s a fair bit subtler than some of his more energetic offerings.  Look out for more Young Montana work in 2011, as his signing to Alpha Pup will hopefully produce some solid results.

Morgan Zarate is best known for pushing r&b and hip hop into new spaces, taking influences from the US and UK and creating raw, emotional and psychedelic beats. On this first EP for Hyperdub, his production steps up in tempo, and the influence on his music of grime and dubstep shines through.

He started on this path in early 2000 when he released the now classic Curvatia as part of the influential group Spacek. He has since produced their critically acclaimed sophomore album Vintage Hi-Tech, and following on from that has worked with soul legends Raphael Saadiq and Amp Fiddler. He’s produced for Ghostface Killah, Dilla's favourites Frank n Dank, Musiq Soulchild, Eska and has worked on campaigns for Nike and others. Most recently his production unit The Shining has
been playlisted on Radio 1.

Hookid is the first 12'' from his forthcoming solo album, which is slated for a 2011 release on Hyperdub. The EP starts with Hookid, a half time grime/dubstep influenced track where swirling and bumping synth melodies try and find space in between congas and hard hand claps.

On Buy Bye dense melody and rhythm splash and pulse, half-heard through a tight mesh of slip-sliding compression like a flashing strobe light through swirling coloured smoke, the effect is intricate and highly psychedelic.

The EP ends with the more straight-forward SP. A simple, urgent sounding synth melody that sounds like it’s been recorded from a 3rd generation cassette of a John Carpenter soundtrack, is built over a hissing rhythm – it’s unusual and memorable in its brevity, like a sonic logo for a mysterious organization from a science fiction film.

Alphabets Heaven - Jay's Odyssey 2011

This is a story in the style of old PS1 and Megadrive platform games… Jay starts off in a garden, and by meeting some fractured and fragmented characters journeys to alphabet’s heaven.

It’s a look at the computer games Alphabets spent years playing; the jagged structure of them, and the kind of mindspace you find yourself in after directing a blue pixellated hedgehog for 5 hours.
